Help Prevent Acidosis in Cattle with Excell™ All‐Natural Prebiotic Supplement

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Acidosis in Cattle

Acidosis is known by several names; lactic acidosis, grain overload, rumenitis, founder and occurs when the acidity of the rumen falls below a pH of 5.5 from a normal of 5.8 to 6 in grain adapted cattle and 6.8 to 7 for cattle on forage. The severity of acidosis and the nature of the symptoms depends on the pH drop, loss of rumen function and degree of other metabolic functions.

Cause of Acidosis

Acidosis is caused by an overload of lactic acid in the rumen produced from the fermentation of excessive amounts of fermentable carbohydrates. The high lactic acid level drives the rumen pH down and significant changes in rumen microflora take place, rumen motility is reduced and the animal goes off feed with a variety of symptoms, including kicking at the belly due to ingestion, discomfort, drooling, panting, eating dirt, and diarrhea.

Prevention

Prevention of acidosis requires keeping feed intake consistent and monitoring the daily intake of readily fermentable carbohydrate to maintain good rumen function. Diet formulation is also important with a good balance of fiber and non‐fiber carbohydrates.

Excell™ Helps Maintain Rumen Function

Excell™, an all‐natural lactobacillus fermentation product supports rumen function, intake and performance of cattle on high grain diets. Excell™ is also an “Excell”ent product for club calves and show animals to help reduce the stress of high carbohydrate feeding and the rigors of the travel and show experience. Research has shown that higher propionate and lower lactate levels improve energy utilization and reduces incidence of bloat and acidosis.

Excell™ Supports a Healthy Rumen

When Excell™ is fed, cattle will develop a strong appetite, efficient rumen function and optimum digestion for maximum nutrient intake for targeted growth and weight gain.

• Helps maintain rumen pH for consistent feed intake and less acidosis

• Encourages high population of rumen microflora for microbial protein and VFA production

• Helps maintains a strong appetite and consistent feed intake

• Helps maintain optimum feed efficiency by supporting digestion and absorption

• Supports immune function and health status
