Butyrate Stimulates the Digestive System Development in Calves
Excell™, the all-natural Lactobacillus Fermentation product from KeyAg Distributors, Murtaugh, Idaho has consistentlly out performed Monensin and Lasalocid in average daily gain and feed efficiency studies on backgrounding cattle.
In vitro studies conducted at the University of Idaho suggests the Excell™ advantage is due to increased total rumenal volatile fatty acid production and a significant increase in butyrate compared to Monensin. Excell™ fed cattle consistently have higher dry matter intakes, ADG and FE results over the ionophores.
An in vitro study conducted at GHC Labs, Filer, Idaho was conducted to investigate the production of acetic acid from Excell™ compared to Monensin as an indicator of fiber digestion. These parameters are important in both beef and dairy production since Monensin is known to significantly reduce fiber digesting micro-organisms which negatively impacts forage digestion contributing to reduced feed intake and butter fat in lactating cattle.
The in vitro study data at GHC Labs shows the acetic acid levels for 7.5 cc’s/hd/day of Excell™ and 350 mg/hd/day of Monensin. Seven sets of each product were incubated for 5 hours and the acetic acid levels were averaged resulting in 333 mg/L of rumen fluid for Excell™ and 308 for Monensin.
Summary
Excell™ produced 25 mg/L (8.1%) more acetate than Monensin which suggests fiber digestion was improve supporting rumenal acetic acid production. This conclusion supports improved rumen function, higher dry matter intake, and butterfat production.
